Accra is set to become the epicentre of Pan‑African engagement later this month as Ghana hosts the Diaspora Summit 2025 from 19–20 December at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). Under the theme “Resetting Ghana: The Diaspora as the 17th Region,” the summit aims to advance dialogue on reparative justice while redefining the role of the African diaspora in Ghana’s development and broader continental progress.
The government of Ghana has framed the summit as a transformative platform that goes beyond traditional diaspora engagement. The event will focus on historical reparations for the enduring impacts of slavery, colonialism, and systemic dispossession, aligning with a continental agenda of justice for Africans and people of African descent.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has emphasised the government’s commitment to elevating diaspora contributions from remittances to strategic partnerships in trade, investment, innovation, and policy dialogue. Officials say the summit will deliver tangible outcomes in education, enterprise, and high‑level networking while fostering a conducive environment for business growth.
A defining aspect of the summit is Ghana’s pledge to facilitate attendance by diaspora participants and people of African descent. Visa fees will be waived for registered summit delegates, a gesture rooted in Pan‑African solidarity and designed to encourage global participation.
The summit’s agenda reflects an expansive vision. Day One will prioritise discussions on reparative justice, emphasising reconciliation, cultural revitalisation, and the restoration of agency for Africans and their descendants. Day Two will focus on integrating the diaspora into Ghana’s socio‑economic fabric, recognising the millions of Ghanaians and people of African descent worldwide who contribute through investment, innovation, cultural exchange, and leadership.
This dual focus — justice and strategic cooperation — signals Ghana’s broader intent to position itself as a home base for Pan‑African identity and collaboration. The summit is expected to attract heads of state, global diaspora leaders, scholars, activists, private sector stakeholders, and cultural institutions, fostering robust networks that could shape future policy and economic frameworks.
In addition to high‑level discussions, the programme features exhibitions, business networking sessions, and a gala celebrating diaspora achievements — all aimed at reinforcing a sense of unity and shared purpose. For many observers, the Diaspora Summit 2025 represents not just a conference but a defining moment in Ghana’s engagement with the global African family, reflecting a renewed push towards cooperation, justice, and continental solidarity.
