GAIDI mobilises African associations in Berlin for integration work

GAIDI gUG, a Berlin-based nonprofit social organisation, has announced the launch of “We Can Do More”, a new initiative aimed at mobilising African associations, organisations and initiatives in Berlin to support the integration of newcomers from African countries.

Supported by the Deutsche Stiftung für Ehrenamt und Engagement (German Foundation for Volunteer Work and Civic Engagement), the project seeks to empower local African communities to play a larger role in helping new migrants, including asylum-seekers and refugees, establish themselves in Berlin.

Berlin is home to an estimated 10,000 African asylum-seekers and refugees and around 70,000 residents of African descent. Despite the presence of around 160 African associations, including sports clubs, cultural groups and national organisations, their involvement in integration work has been limited. “We Can Do More” aims to address this gap by creating a centralized resource hub where African associations can access guidance, network with each other and collaborate on projects focused on supporting newcomers.

The project will provide African associations with information on the challenges faced by refugees and recent migrants, highlight areas where they can offer support and raise awareness of available resources. GAIDI will conduct online, telephone and in-person consultations, offering tailored advice to each organization on how best to engage in integration work. By promoting collaboration among Berlin’s African associations, the project encourages them to identify the needs of African refugees, asylum-seekers and other newcomers and work together on developing effective support programs.

GAIDI’s “We Can Do More” project is an open invitation to Berlin’s African community to join hands in creating a more welcoming environment for African newcomers.
