Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing non-communicable diseases worldwide, affecting all segments of the population and contributing to rising mortality rates.
In Germany alone, the German Diabetes Centre estimates that around 8.5 million people are living with diabetes, the vast majority with type 2. An additional 2 million people are believed to be undiagnosed, meaning the total number of the affected could reach 10.5 million.
Globally, the World Health Organization has identified sub-Saharan Africa as the region with the fastest-growing diabetes rates. Contributing factors include rapid urbanisation, high-calorie diets, sedentary routines, limited access to healthcare and a high number of undiagnosed cases.

Maisha has recognised diabetes — particularly type 2 — as a pressing health issue within the African community in Germany. Based on insights from those who seek counselling at its Frankfurt centre, Maisha attributes this trend in part to dietary habits and lifestyle choices.
To share its experience and raise awareness on a broader scale, Maisha has published an informative and accessible booklet that clearly explains what diabetes is and how to prevent it.
The booklet includes:
* Guidance on how to recognise symptoms and determine your diabetes type.
* Detailed information on the nutritional value of different foods and how they affect your health.
* Simple, healthy recipes for meals throughout the day.
* Practical tips on how physical activity can help prevent and manage diabetes.
Written in clear, easy-to-understand language, this brochure is an invaluable resource for individuals and families seeking to take control of their health.
