Frankfurt set to host Nollywood Film Festival Germany 2026

The Nollywood Film Festival Germany returns to Frankfurt from 31 July to 1 August 2026, bringing together filmmakers, actors, musicians, entrepreneurs and fans of African cinema for two days celebrating one of the world’s fastest-growing film industries. Combining film screenings, live entertainment and the prestigious Nollywood Europe Golden Awards (NEGA), the event aims to strengthen cultural ties between Africa and Europe while showcasing the creativity and global appeal of Nollywood.

Frankfurt will once again become a meeting point for lovers of African storytelling when the Nollywood Film Festival Germany (NFFG) and the Nollywood Europe Golden Awards (NEGA) Gala Night take place on 31 July and 1 August 2026.

The annual festival has grown into one of the most prominent showcases of African cinema outside the continent. This year’s edition promises an exciting blend of film, music, comedy, networking and cultural exchange, attracting participants from Germany, across Europe, Africa, the United States and beyond.

More than a celebration of movies, the festival serves as a platform for promoting African creative talent, encouraging investment in the creative industries and strengthening cultural diplomacy between Africa and Europe.

Behind the glitz sits a more deliberate ambition. The festival is organised by Ehizoya Golden Entertainment e.V. under the leadership of cultural ambassador Isaac Izoya, with backing from the Nigerian Consulate General in Frankfurt, the city’s Department of Arts and Culture (Kulturamt), the Deutsches Filminstitut and Filmmuseum (DFF), Nollywood Practitioners Europe and the Edo Union e.V. Frankfurt. That list of partners signals something beyond entertainment: an effort, now in its latest instalment, to use African film as a genuine point of connection between Nigeria, Germany and the diaspora communities who call both home.

Opening Night at the German Film Museum

The festival opens on Friday, 31 July, at the Deutsches Filmmuseum in Frankfurt with an official opening ceremony followed by two feature film screenings.

The programme begins with A Visit to Ward 4, directed by Tony Edozie and produced by Rosabelle Jeanne Andrews, before audiences are treated to Follow Me to Forever (Folge mir in die Ewigkeit), directed by Eric Stephenson. Together, the films highlight the diversity of contemporary Nollywood storytelling, ranging from drama to compelling human-interest narratives.

The opening night offers audiences in Germany a rare opportunity to watch the new Nigerian productions on the big screen while engaging directly with the filmmakers.

Gala Night Celebrates Excellence

On Saturday, 1 August, attention shifts to the Saray Turkuaz Hall for the Nollywood Europe Golden Awards (NEGA) Gala Night, where outstanding achievements in African cinema and entertainment will be recognised.

The evening will feature another film screening Paradise Africa, directed by Olabisi (Bisi Akin) Akinbinu, before the awards ceremony gives way to a night of live entertainment.

Among the announced performers are musicians Emperor Wadada and Amin-Man, while comedians Dauda and FiddyIce will provide comic relief. Music throughout the evening will be supplied by DJ Rock, with organisers promising an atmosphere that blends glamour, entertainment and celebration.

Several well-known personalities from Nollywood and the African entertainment industry are expected to attend, creating opportunities for audiences to meet actors, filmmakers, musicians, entrepreneurs and community leaders.

More Than Film

One of the festival’s greatest strengths is its ability to bring together people from different professional and cultural backgrounds.

Beyond the screenings and awards, the event provides space for networking, reconnecting with old friends and building new partnerships across the creative industries. Organisers describe it as a gathering where cinema, business, culture and the African diaspora intersect, creating opportunities for collaboration that extend beyond the festival itself.

For many attendees, the event has become an annual reunion of Africans living in Europe, while also introducing German and international audiences to the richness and diversity of African storytelling.

Nollywood’s Growing Global Influence

Nollywood has evolved from a regional film industry into one of the world’s largest producers of feature films, with growing audiences on streaming platforms and at international festivals. As African cinema gains increasing recognition globally, festivals such as this one in Frankfurt help connect filmmakers with new audiences while promoting cross-cultural understanding.

As Nollywood continues to expand its international reach, this year’s festival offers audiences in Germany more than entertainment. It is an opportunity to experience the creativity, diversity and global influence of African cinema while celebrating a cultural industry that continues to shape conversations far beyond the continent.

Whether the draw is the films, the awards, the music or simply the chance to be among familiar faces from across the continent, the Nollywood Film Festival Germany and NEGA Gala Night have carved out a genuine place on Europe’s cultural calendar. For Nollywood fans, diaspora Africans in Germany and anyone curious about where African cinema is headed next, Frankfurt at the end of July is where the story is unfolding.
