World’s biggest Afrobeats festival moves to Ghana in December

If you are looking for an additional reason to spend the Christmas-New Year season in Ghana, here is one: Accra will host the biggest names and future stars in Afrobeats on 29-30 December.

Afro Nation, which dubs itself as the world’s biggest Afrobeats festival, will move its giant stages from Portugal to the Black Star Square in Accra, where Ghana’s Independence was declared by President Kwame Nkrumah in 1957, as it seeks to inspire the development of the live music industry on the continent.

Afro Nation, which took place for the first time in Praia da Rocha, Portugal, in 2019, welcoming more than 25,000 people, moves to the African continent in December to connect with the source of the music that it celebrates.

On why they chose Ghana’s capital city for the event, the organisers said, “Accra has blossomed as a cultural and musical hub and during the turn of the new year welcomes thousands from the global diaspora who travel home to party and be together with friends and family”.

Afro Nation took place for the second time in July in Portugal and welcomed more than 35,000 fans and hosted stars such as Davido, Whizkid, Chris Brown etc for a 3-day celebration of Afrobeats. The festival did not hold in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Afro Nation is meanwhile going global, taking its fun from the beaches of the Algarve coast in Portugal to the places where they’re large populations of people of African descent. Apart from Afro Nation Portugal, you also have Afro Nation Puerto Rico and now Afro Nation Ghana.

“As with Afro Nation Portugal and Afro Nation Puerto Rico, Afro Nation Ghana will work alongside and train local teams to produce the show, and bring business to as many local vendors as possible, bringing a positive impact to Ghana’s cultural and tourism economy,” the organisers said.

“Afro Nation’s aim has always been to elevate the scene and artists from or inspired by the modern sounds of Africa, and by establishing this stage in Ghana and bringing the exact same high production value from Portugal to West Africa, is just one step towards a bright new future of live events in the region.”
