German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered his New Year’s address to the nation at the end of 2025, outlining his vision and priorities for 2026 and urging citizens to face global and domestic challenges with confidence and unity.
In his speech, Merz reflected on the past year as one of both personal and national stories, marked by achievements, setbacks, and rapid global change. He emphasised that as Germany enters 2026, citizens should take stock not only individually, but also together as a nation.
A central theme of the address was the need for a renewal of the foundations of freedom, security, and prosperity—goals that Merz described as essential for the coming decades. He noted that 2025 brought major political decisions, including the federal election and the formation of a new government, tasks that he said required “determination and a clear sense of direction.”
Merz did not shy away from acknowledging global uncertainties. He pointed to the war in Ukraine as a stark reminder of threats to freedom and security and highlighted the pressures facing Germany’s economy from necessary reforms, high costs, and global trade tensions. He urged citizens not to be overwhelmed by fear but to trust in their collective strength.
Internationally, Merz used the address to argue for a more assertive Europe that can safeguard peace, freedom, and prosperity in a world marked by geopolitical tension. He stressed that Germany is not “a ball in the hands of superpowers” but a country capable of shaping its own destiny within a united Europe.
Domestically, the Chancellor emphasised the need for significant reforms to boost the economy and strengthen social systems in the face of demographic change and strain on public finances. He called for patience and confidence, urging Germans to support planned changes rather than succumb to pessimism.
Throughout the address, Merz combined a tone of cautious optimism with a call for action, inviting all citizens to contribute to a “moment of renewal” for Germany in 2026. His message aimed to set the tone for a year that he believes could be pivotal for both Germany and Europe.
