Maisha’s Blueprint: Pregnancy and Baby Care in the Diaspora

This is the second instalment in our review series of empowering publications by Maisha – African Women in Germany e.V., a Frankfurt-based nonprofit organisation dedicated to supporting African women and families.

In this compact yet impactful 16-page booklet, Enjoy the Time with Your Baby, Maisha offers practical and culturally sensitive guidance drawn from lived experiences. The publication provides essential tips on how expectant mothers can care for themselves and their unborn babies throughout pregnancy.

From advice on what to eat and drink — and what to avoid — to recommended physical activities and wellness practices, the booklet serves as a vital resource, especially for first-time mothers. It is particularly valuable for those navigating pregnancy and early motherhood in the Diaspora, often without extended family or informal support networks.

Beyond pregnancy, the brochure also addresses the postpartum period, offering insight into how young mothers can maintain their health and manage the challenges of early childcare.

Produced with the support of the Frankfurt Health Department (Gesundheitsamt), the publication is tailored specifically for African migrant families. It also contains a carefully curated list of pediatricians in Frankfurt, along with important emergency contact numbers — information that could prove lifesaving in critical situations.
