On Friday, 19 September 2025, Germany will mark the National Day of Civil Courage (Tag der Zivilcourage), a nationwide initiative promoting democratic values, social engagement and tolerance. From 10 AM to 6 PM, communities across the country will host events encouraging citizens to stand against discrimination and injustice.
Nationwide Participation
Numerous cities are participating in the Day of Civil Courage. For instance, in Berlin, Leopoldplatz will serve as a vibrant centre for the day’s activities. In Munich, the event will be held at Bonner Straße 2, Schwabing, featuring discussions and performances.
Organized by various local civil society groups, the event will feature information booths, interactive workshops and performances aimed at fostering dialogue and community involvement.
These events aim to engage citizens in meaningful conversations about civic responsibility and the importance of standing up for democratic principles. The gatherings also provide a platform for marginalized groups, including refugees and diaspora communities, to share their experiences and initiatives, thereby promoting inclusion and solidarity.
A Call to Action
The Day of Civil Courage underscores the significance of active participation in safeguarding democracy. It encourages individuals to take a stand against intolerance and to contribute to building a more inclusive society.
By participating in these events, individuals can play a pivotal role in promoting tolerance, respect and unity within their communities, serving as a reminder that each act of courage contributes to the collective efforts of fostering a just and democratic society.
