Festival brings Africa’s rhythms and colours to Potsdam

The city of Potsdam, the capital of the federal state of Brandenburg, will host the 14th Africa Festival on Saturday, 5 July.

Themed “Tracing Africa’s Footprints: Unity in Diversity”, the festival promises a full-day celebration with free, family-friendly activities showcasing the continent’s vibrant cultures and fostering connections between the African and local communities.

The 2025 event offers something for everyone – music lovers, families, foodies, fashion enthusiasts and anyone curious to explore African heritage in Germany.

Mark your calendars:
Date: Saturday, 5 July 2025
Venue: Platz vor dem Brandenburger Tor, Potsdam
Time: 10 AM to 10 PM

As in previous years, the festival will feature a wide range of activities.

What Awaits You on July 5:

  • A market fair with authentic African crafts, fashion and artwork
  • Live performances of music and dance, including body painting and choreographed pieces
  • Fashion shows and cultural parades featuring traditional dress from diverse African nations
  • Interactive workshops
  • Street procession
  • A feast of African culinary delights

Founded in 2011 by ICDI e. V. (International Centre for Germans and Immigrants), Africa Festival has become a cornerstone of Potsdam’s cultural calendar – a space for unity, where music, art, fashion and food become instruments of connection.

Last year, the event drew around 4,000 visitors over two days. Organisers say there are many reasons to attend this year’s festival – from discovering cultural expressions rarely seen at mainstream events in Germany, to engaging with Africans from all walks of life and celebrating African culture in an inclusive and welcoming setting.

In her dual role as festival director and ICDI chairwoman, Charity Esther Okezie-A. highlights the event’s central mission: preserving African cultural heritage while promoting integration, mutual respect and social cohesion. “The festival stands for living diversity and encounters,” she said.

As Potsdam’s international population continues to grow, the festival gains even greater significance — honouring the ties between Potsdam and Africa, confronting stereotypes, and nurturing a sense of belonging for all residents. With support from the City of Potsdam, regional businesses, especially ProPotsdam GmbH, and migrant organisations, the festival has become a vibrant symbol that, in the words of its director, “Potsdam is and will remain colourful.”
