African Book Festival celebrates ‘Other Worlds’ in Berlin

African Book Festival will once again turn Berlin into a vibrant meeting point for literary voices from the African continent and its diaspora. Under the theme “In Other Worlds,” the festival will take place from 18–20 July, offering three days of readings, panels, performances and powerful discussions on African storytelling in all its genres and dimensions.

Organised by InterKontinental, the festival opens on Friday evening with a staged reading of Ivana Akotowaa Ofori’s work, followed by a much-anticipated Poetry Night on Saturday featuring poets such as Poetra Asantewa, D.I. Jolly, Nii Ayikwei Parkes and Ivana Akotowaa Ofori, whose words bridge borders and generations.

This year’s programme leans heavily into speculative fiction, Afrofuturism and mythology, asking what these “other worlds” can offer African audiences. Events like “What Do Other Worlds Have to Offer?”, “Sauútiverse: Writing Within a Shared Other World” and “All Stories Belong to the Spider” explore how folklore, fantasy and shared mythologies shape identity and resilience.

Alongside these, the programme addresses historical trauma and contemporary challenges. Panels such as “Displaced in Chains” and “Off-World Experiences: Africans in the Diaspora” dive into themes of migration, colonial memory and belonging. A special tribute to the late May Ayim, presented by Lara-Sophie Milagro, honours the Afro-German poet’s enduring legacy.

Daytime book talks feature beloved authors like Ama Asantewa Diaka, Cheryl S. Ntumy, T.L. Huchu and Maame Blue, while engaging sessions like Book Speed Dating, Two Truths and a Lie: African Mythology Edition, and Your Next Good Read keep the atmosphere lively and inclusive.

True to its mission, the African Book Festival 2025 promises not just a celebration of African literature, but a challenge to borders — both real and imagined.
