Major airline tightens rules on powerbanks on flights

From 1 October 2025, Emirates passengers will face stricter rules when travelling with powerbanks. The Dubai-based airline says the move is aimed at enhancing onboard safety amid rising incidents involving lithium batteries across the aviation industry.

According to the new policy, passengers may still bring powerbanks on board under certain conditions, but using or charging them during the flight is strictly prohibited. Emirates highlighted that the growing use of portable chargers has been linked to several inflight incidents, prompting tougher measures.

What the new rules mean for travellers
  • Only powerbanks with a capacity below 100 watt-hours are permitted.

  • Each device must have clear capacity labeling.

  • Approved powerbanks must be kept either in the seat pocket or under the passenger’s seat.

  • Powerbanks remain banned in checked luggage.

Other major carriers enforce similar restrictions. The German airline Lufthansa, for instance, also prohibits charging powerbanks in flight and requires special approval for units above 100 watt-hours. Asian airlines, according to the German motoring association ADAC, are particularly strict.

Why airlines are cautious

Powerbanks can overheat, particularly while charging, posing serious risks such as fire, explosion or the release of toxic fumes. Emirates noted that keeping powerbanks within reach of the crew ensures quick action in the event of an emergency.

The dangers are not theoretical: in Athens, a passenger aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing after a faulty powerbank overheated during flight.

The bottom line

For Emirates passengers, the message is clear: carry smaller-capacity powerbanks if necessary, never check them into hold luggage, and don’t use them during the flight. The airline says safety will always take precedence over convenience.
