African women in Europe to meet in Düsseldorf

African women from across Europe will gather in the western German city of Düsseldorf on 18 June. Organised by African Women in Europe (AWE) Network under the theme Leadership & Integration for Change, the one-day event will feature discussions on issues affecting African women, their career development and the opportunities for professional advancement.

Among the speakers billed to speak at the event, which will take place at the Maritim Hotel Düsseldorf, are London-based lawyer and entrepreneur Jennifer Obaseki and Muzware Betty Makoni, a mentor, trainer and coach who is also based in the United Kingdom. Others are Veye Wirngo Tatah, a computer scientist who is the editor of the German-language bimonthly magazine Africa Positive and the organiser of Afro-Ruhr Festival, and Phoebe Ruguru, a filmmaker and writer.

The AWE Network was created in 2008 as an online platform by Kenyan-born Joy Zenz, who lives in Germany. Every year, the organisation hosts its annual meeting in one of the main cities in Europe. “AWE brings together a powerful network of women of distinction providing peer support. Members actively support each other’s projects, events and businesses. This has had a catalyst effect with no member being left behind, all excelling,” said Ms Zenz.

A highlight of the event like every year is the AWE Awards, which according to Zenz, were launched with the aim of acknowledging African women in Europe and their achievements in the communities in which they live.
