Protests against right-wing extremist demonstration in Berlin

Berliners turned out on Saturday to register their protest against a public demonstration by the right-wing extremist organization “Wir für Deutschland (WFD).

The alliance Bündnis für ein weltoffenes und tolerantes Berlin (Alliance for an open and tolerant Berlin), a joint effort of churches, trade unions, charities, Landessportbund Berlin and further actors of civil society, held a counter demonstration in the German capital city.

Under the slogan “Deine Stimme gegen Hass und Rassismus” (Your Voice against Hate and Racism), protesters turned out at the Spreebogen to speak out loudly against the neo-Nazis.

Speaking at the event, a spokeswoman of the alliance said: “we call on the citizens of this city to support us, to show that we live in an open-minded society free from hatred. Because we are convinced that a democratic society has to defend itself against intolerance, racism, anti-Semitism, and nationalism.”

WfD hat publicly demonstrated against a new grand coalition and the presence of “too many” immigrants in the country. The neo-Nazi group has been organizing the series of demonstrations under the slogan “Merkel muss weg” (Merkel must go) since 2016
