MoneyGram launches money transfer service to all bank accounts in Ghana

MoneyGram has begun supporting transfers to any bank in Ghana. Funds can be sent either online, on a mobile device, or at one of the 350.000 MoneyGram locations worldwide. The received money is accessible in minutes* through an ATM, in person or online.

The service aims to offer consumers in Ghana more digital transfer options while also expanding the company’s digital growth. “We see a potential in the increasing adoption of banking services in Ghana and want to drive financial inclusion in the region by offering our consumers more digital money transfer options,” said Grant Lines, MoneyGram’s global chief revenue officer.

According to the World Bank, in 2017, $2.2 billion flowed into Ghana, up 4.3% compared to 2016 what makes the country fifth largest remittances recipient in Africa. The inflows come mainly from the United States ($585 million), Nigeria ($395 million), the United Kingdom ($286 million), Italy ($145 million) and Germany ($115 million).

Zero fee for online sends**

In Germany for example, senders benefit from a great introduction price. Customers who send money online to a bank account in Ghana pay NO transfer fee, irrespective of the amount sent. Customer who prefer to send money in person directly to bank account benefit from a flat rate of €3. In order to process the money transfer, MoneyGram only needs the receiver’s full legal name, the bank name and bank account number.
