THE AFRICAN COURIER. Reporting Africa and its Diaspora! The African Courier is an international magazine published in Germany to report on Africa and the Diaspora African experience. The first issue of the bimonthly magazine appeared on the newsstands on 15 February 1998. The African Courier is a communication forum for European-African political, economic and cultural exchanges, and a voice for Africa in Europe.
“Global Networking & Modern Economy” was the motto of this year’s Africa Day Conference. AfricanTide Union e.V. hosted the event for the eighth year in Dortmund. From May 24 to 26 representatives of African Diaspora communities met politicians and ambassadors, entrepreneurs, creative minds and interested citizens from Germany and abroad at the Dortmund Town Hall.
The economic situation in Africa but also in Germany played a central role during the numerous workshops and panel discussions as well as the effects of globalization on people in Africa and Europe alike. The conference developed ideas for empowering people in Africa, such as a new training centre in Nigeria, as well as opportunities for better economic cooperation between Europe and Africa.
“We as an association know the potentials that are dormant in many African countries. More and more companies are contacting us to implement concrete projects in Africa,” says Norbert Tschirpke, project coordinator at AfricanTide Union. Particularly small and medium-sized companies are increasingly interested in investment opportunities. Thus, the conference served as a door opener for some participants.

During the conference in the town hall, it became clear once again that the participants themselves were as diverse as their clothes: In addition to Dortmund city director Jörg Stüdemann, the ambassador of Zimbabwe, HE Ruth Masodzi Chikwira, and a representative of her Nigerian counterpart, numerous guests from Germany and abroad took part in the conference. “That’s what our conference is about, we want to network, bring people together. Together, we develop strategies on many topics that affect Africa and Europe,” says Dr RosaLyn Dressman, chairperson of AfricanTide Union e.V.
Africa Day, which commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (now African Union) in Addis Ababa on 25 May 1963, is marked both in Africa and its Diaspora communities across the globe.
