More than 2,200 attacks on refugees in Germany in 2017

Although the total number of attacks on refugees fell by about one-third from the previous year, the level remains high. More than 300 people were injured in the attacks.

German newspapers reported Wednesday that there were 2,219 reported attacks on migrants and refugees and their accommodations in 2017. While this means there was an average of six attacks per day, this is a big drop from the number of attacks on migrants and refugees in 2016 (more than 3,500).

The attacks in 2017 resulted in more than 300 injuries. The German government has condemned the attacks.

Six attacks per day

Ulla Jelpke, a member of the Left party, blamed members of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) for the violence.

“More than 2,000 right-wing and racist attacks on refugees in 2017 is an expression of an aggressive mood in the country which has been promoted by the AfD and other extreme right groups,” said Jelpke to dpa.

Jelpke added that the CDU and its Bavarian sister party the Christian Socialists (CSU) “never miss an opportunity to demand harsher measures when dealing with refugees” and demanded that “especially the Christian democratic parties stop with the cheap propaganda directed towards refugees”.

Merkel made the decision to welcome migrants and refugees in 2015. More than 1 million people have come to Germany since the announcement. However, it has caused a massive divide in opinion in Germany.
